Man collared for sending threat to singer Ayumi Hamasaki in extortion attempt
A man who sent a threatening letter to Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki and tried to extort money from the president of her agency's parent company has been arrested, police said.
Motoyoshi Fujii, 42, was arrested on suspicion of attempted extortion. Police are investigating how he found out the singer's home address.
Investigators accuse Fujii of attempting to extort money from the 45-year-old president of Avex Group Holdings, and sending a threatening letter to Hamasaki's home in late December last year, reading: "Deposit 500 million yen into the designated account within one week. If you don't, I'll set the president's home on fire and burn him whole. These are orders from my gang boss."
Officials at Shibuya Police Station, which took Fujii into custody, said that the 42-year-old has admitted to the allegations against him.
Fujii also allegedly threatened arson against another female singer belonging to Hamasaki's agency, Avex Management. He wrote his name and address on the envelope, leading police to suspect him in the threat against Hamasaki.
